Susan G. Assouline, Ph.D., clinical associate professor in school psychology at the University of Iowa, associate director and clinical supervisor at the university’s Belin-Blank Center, and author

Susan serves as the Belin-Blank Center's primary consultant regarding whole-grade acceleration, mathematically talented students, and students who are gifted and also have an exceptionality that may interfere with the manifestation of the gift. She is the lead investigator for Twice-Exceptional Study, which the center is currently conducting. In addition, she is the co-author of the book, Developing Mathematical Talent, and co-developer of The Iowa Acceleration Scale.

 

 
 

Susan Baum, Ph.D., educator, author, consultant, and co-founder of AEGUS, the Association for the Education of Gifted Underachieving Students

Susan is currently Professor of Education at the Graduate School of the College of New Rochelle. There she draws on her background in both special and gifted education to teach courses in elementary education and the education of gifted and talented students. Her writing and research cover many areas of education, including differentiated curriculum and instruction, gifted education, gifted learning-disabled students, and gifted underachieving students. In addition, she consults nationally and internationally and has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Gifted Children.

 

 
 

Kathi Kearney, M.A. Ed., educator, writer, lecturer, and founder of the Hollingworth Center for Highly Gifted Children, a national resource and support network for exceptionally gifted children and their families

Currently a teacher of gifted students, Kathi is the past chair of the Conceptual Foundations Division of the National Association for Gifted Children and has contributed to scholarly journal articles on such topics as assessment, the highly gifted child, minority groups in gifted education, and Leta Hollingworth's work on children with IQ scores above 180. She is also a Professional Associate with the Gifted Development Center in Denver, Colorado. In the past, Kathi was an instructor in talented and gifted education at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

 

 
 

Deirdre Lovecky, Ph.D., clinical psychologist whose specialty is working with gifted children and adolescents, especially those who are highly and exceptionally gifted and those with learning disabilities, AD/HD, Asperger's Syndrome, or other behavioral or mental health disorders.

Deirdre is the Director of the Gifted Resource Center of New England, located in Providence, RI. There she offers clinical psychological and educational services in assessment, psychotherapy, curriculum design, school consultation, and teacher in-service. She is the author of the newly released book, Different Minds: Gifted Children with AD/HD, Asperger Syndrome, and Other Learning Deficits.

 

 
 

Marlo Payne Rice, M.S., owner and director of the Brideun School for Exceptional Children and The Center for Education Enrichment, a private educational consulting company

Marlo specializes in creating successful learning environments that address the social, emotional, sensory, and cognitive needs of twice-exceptional children. In 1999 she founded Brideun School in Colorado, which offers a program designed exclusively for this “out-of-sync” population. The school's program is based on the experience Margo gained working as a psychologist in private and public schools and in private psychiatric facilities, autism training centers, residential and day-treatment programs, private counseling and assessment centers, and private educational consulting firms. 

 

 
 

Linda Kreger Silverman, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist who directs the Gifted Development Center and Visual-Spatial Resource

Over 4,200 children have been assessed at the Gifted Development Center over the last 24 years, many of them twice exceptional. Linda has 45 years of experience studying the gifted. For nine years she served on the faculty of the University of Denver in counseling psychology and education. She founded the Advanced Development Journal and edited Counseling the Gifted and Talented and Giftedness in Adults. Her newest book, Upside-Down Brilliance: The Visual-Spatial Learner, focuses on 2e children and adults. She was invited to write the chapter on "Children with Learning Disabilities," for the recently released Handbook of Gifted Education.  

 

 
 

Joan Franklin Smutny, M.A., educator, author, and founder and director of the Center for Gifted at National-Louis University.

Joan directs enrichment programs for thousands of gifted children in the Chicago area and teaches creative writing to children in her programs. In addition, she teaches courses on gifted education to graduate students. Dr. Smutny has authored, co-authored and edited numerous articles and books on gifted education for teachers and parents. Among her books are Stand up for Your Gifted Child and Underserved Gifted Populations.  

 

 
 

Meredith Warshaw, M.S.S., M.A., special needs Educational advisor, writer, lecturer, and contributing editor for 2e: Twice-Exceptional Newsletter

Meredith works to help families of 2e children better understand their children's needs. She is the creator of the Uniquely Gifted website of information for families with 2e children and the people who work with them. Meredith is co-founder of the GT-Special email list for families with 2e children, and founder of the GT-Spec-Home list for homeschooling 2e families. Her writing has appeared in a variety of publications, including the newsletter of the Association for the Education of Underachieving Students, ADDitude, Life Learning, and the book Uniquely Gifted: Identifying and Meeting the Needs of the Twice-Exceptional Student, edited by Kiesa Kay. She has also spoken at a variety of conferences on giftedness, special needs, and homeschooling.
